Testing lighting levels

Good afternoon folks,

I have been searching for a procedure for testing lighting levels, but so far have been unable to find a specific method. For general lighting, I would measure lux levels on the working plane, which in the absence of a detailed design, I imagine to be one metre above the floor. Is this correct?

For emergency lighting I would measure from floor level.

How many measurements would I need to take, for example in a room 10 metres by 10 metres?

for emergency escape routes I would measure at changes of direction, changes of level, any obstructions etc but along a straight corridor, how close should the measurements be taken?

I assume all the lux measurements are undertaken where the sole source of lighting is the luminaires themselves, so in some cases this will need to be done at night.

Is there a guide, which details the exact procedure?

Apologies if this is basic stuff, but I have not had to do this before?

Thanks for your help!
