Graduate Engineer who lacks experience.

I have recently graduated from university with a first in Mechanical Engineering however I lack work experience in the field. I feel like this is going to hold me back in terms of employability as graduate schemes are often fiercely competitive. What's a good way to quickly gain work experience? I've rang a few local companies but I always end up being directed to emails to no avail.

Have you tried the Job Center:

    http://www.gov.uk/find-a-job

Just click 'Start Now', then enter your subject followed by location. See what comes up?

You could also try one of the job agencies on the high street in your area. The object is to get 6 to 12 months experience in a role that will build your experience, so you can be competitive in future prospective job interviews.

You can also look to see if suitable permanent jobs (academic and technical) are available at UK Universities:

    http://www.jobs.ac.uk/

Finally, the IET have a jobs section, but I suspect it's aimed more for experienced engineers.

    Hope that helps.
