East Anglian Storms Bring Power Cuts. Winds that nearly knock you off your feet and very heavy rain from the North.
A wooden pole carrying overheads locally in a field caught fire at the top. Three 11kV lines supported on porcelain insulators on a horizontal steel cross piece had one insulator fail. It cracked and allowed the cable to touch the steel cross piece.
About half a meter below on the same pole are five low Voltage cables. The H.V. tracked on the wet pole to the top insulated L.V. cable and stared a pole fire.
Many holiday chalets had appliances damaged and plugs blew up. A t.v. power supply exploded.
In one chalet the main switch was turned off but the lights continued to flicker on and off as in a horror film.
All chalets are TT earthed and of wooden construction with some having a concrete base floor.
