HM Revenue and Customs late tax return Penalty

Good afternoon.

Anybody here received a late tax return notice of penalty assessment?

Completed my on-line self assessment tax return and paid the tax owing last June. So now I have just received a penalty notice. What's more, they give you a telephone number to call which when you do, you are obliged to listen to endless nonsense saying how busy they are and then ask you to participate in a survey to tell them how wonderful they are but they require your mobile number, If you opt out they then say they are too busy and hang up.

Now is there anybody out there who have a hot line number to get through to somebody who works in the tax office?
They really need to hire more competent people..

Legh

Edit: Been on the phone for  an hour, got though to some chap who said this is the PAYE section. I'll transfer you to self-assaessment department. Why on earth would I need to pay a late penalty as a PAYE 'customer'?

Is this a rant I wonder?

  • No, but I did get a reminder letter dated 2nd February to remind me that I need to pay any tax due by the 31st January. They also said that in the circumstances "it was unlikely that I would be able to do this". I guess this phrase is used to make the standard letter inclusive for time-lords. :)

    Legh, keep smiling my friend!
