Dad, What is a milli Guass and can it hurt me?

  • It can't hurt you, it is a weak magnetic field. Real fields in motors etc. are measured in kilo-Gauss, a million times as big.
  • The magnetic field (conventionally represented in maths books by the B vector) is what is measured in gauss , in this case  it is the result of the circulation of the current

Optimum magnetic field creation involves circular loops, and the exact relation between E and B for spidery house wiring and pipes is a bit vague.

Note - gauss are an old unit like fathoms or gil and the modern one would be Tesla, or T.

Gauss, like calories instead of joules, or degrees Farenheit, they refuse to go away, especially in US literature.

1T = 10000 gauss. (because there are 100cm per metre, and the gauss is based on a centimetric system, not a metric one)

Tp give you a feel one tesla is the field at the poles of strong traditional magnet, that you would handle without ill effects. The modern rare earth ones manage a bit more, and some medical scanners manage 8 or 9 tesla.

The earths magnetic field is ~ 20  to 50 microtesla, perhaps 0.5 gauss.

So these sort of tens of  gauss fields in your videos from a few amps in loops of tens of square metres,  will fool a compass, and can easily be detected. Biological effects are not likely from the magnetic effects, but induction hearing aids do not like it, and have to use special hum reduction circuits.

  • High-resolution NMR scanners use fields of 12-15 Tesla, from superconducting magnet coils. They can get images of the insides of individual cells, but are quite unusual and very expensive!

DZ, even though she may use them, I am sure that your daughter does not refer to "NMR" scanners (as they were known originally) 'cos the thought of anything "nuclear" would frighten the patients. ?

I still think TN-S should be dominant, or 3x230 TN-S without the neutral distributed.
