We launched a new report today that looks at advancing safety in transport through automation. We look at four transport modes: road, rail, maritime and air, reviewing their current approaches to safety and risk and covering the expected impact of automation on safety. We examine how the transport sector is actively pursuing the benefits in cost, safety, and flexibility from the technology behind semi and fully autonomous vehicles.

  • mmm I think there are big risks to automated transport , but at least you would never have a driver shortage , at the moment its also debateable how transport will look in the future ,in terms of tonnage anyhow. 

    It does have some green marketing , but If you have seen the movie based on Issac Asimovs I Robot , you might be right to ponder which programs get to run the show , and if 3 laws safe would be how it could look ?

    I think every government has set itself the goal of effectively shaping the mobility of the future. Digital innovations in the field of transportation should enable modern, clean, barrier-free and affordable mobility in cities and rural areas. This requires the development of new and innovative concepts of mobility. Digitization of transportation systems plays a key role here. Autonomous and network driving technologies and the application of artificial intelligence methods are essential core components.

  • Sad to see that the report cover photo shows big, hard, fast aggressive looking things heading straight for us! So we're not aiming for any improvement to all those local trips? I'll take the robot plane to Tesco, shall I? 

  • The driver of a car has a duty of care for any passengers.  With trains and boats and planes, the transport operator has the duty of care for the passengers.  Who has the duty of care for the passengers in a Level 5 [fully autonomous] car?

  • There's also BS EN 26262 suite of standards for functional safety of road vehicles, a bit of a 61508 for cars.
