Electric Vehicles and Hybrids

The advantage of electric vehicles is to reduce carbon emissions and these can be charged at home and if you are lucky may even be charged by a solar panel on your roof. Excellent.

But some hybrids do not have a home charger socket and also no way of switching on to electric only when in city centres.

Can someone please explain to me how these hybrids can be more efficient than an identical none electric car which does not have to carry an extra battery etc?

  • That is excellent news that ford have the option to be environmentally friendly in city centres by using the battery power only.

Ideally, I would like a tiny hybrid with under 1,000 cc engine and 15 kWh Lithium ion battery as the Honda and Ford's are large vehicles.
  • I have the Kia Ceed Plug-In EV, it's a 1598cc petrol hybrid with roughly 30miles range on EV, it will also collect charge whilst cruising on petrol so it can be full EV in the city, retain or collect charge on the open road and revert to EV when back into the city so it is a good halfway house as I have no range anxiety when traveling to sites around the UK that I would if it was EV only. I can get 65 to 70 miles per gallon on average depending on my driving style and location this can go higher or it can drop !!

  • Err, I've had a 93 ICE Citroën that did better than that, I mean, daily. And I think other half's IQ did too.

    Must try harder.

  • Hi Alastair

Does your Kia have an Atkinson cycle engine.
  • Good morning CliveS,

First you need to understand that a hybrid vehicle is an "electric hybrid" vehicle. I will explain:
Two energy sources gasoline engine and electric motor. This means that unlike electric vehicles, there is no need to connect them to a power source to charge their electric battery, because when the electric battery is weak, the petrol engine charges it back.

In addition, in any mode of braking or cruising the vehicle, the engine utilizes this mode to generate electricity and charge the battery. The result - zero fuel consumption, zero pollutant emissions and significantly quieter urban driving.

I live in Israel and every year our roads are filled with more and more electric or hybrid cars, which not only contribute to the preservation of the environment, but also save a lot of money for drivers.

It should be taken into account in a full electric vehicle (EV) regarding the range of travel and that there are charging positions compared to a hybrid vehicle I explained above (the battery is charged by the engine). There is no doubt that a hybrid vehicle has less worries about charging.

  • Hi CliveS,
The biggest advantage of plug-in hybrid cars: is in the range of kilometers, therefore the combination of an electric engine and a combustion engine results in a range of about 600 kilometers. In general, EV mode (electric vehicle mode) can be activated with the plug-in hybrid drive, after which the vehicle travels for distances of 30 to 50 kilometers electrically only and this saves on fuel consumption and of course on reducing pollutants and therefore this makes hybrid cars ideal for trips within the city. For comparison, the range of an electric car is shorter depending on the model, between 120 and 220 kilometers, so these values will continue to increase in the future.
