Electrical Question.

Thus an “x” having a current element the torque of which is opposed by the torque of the Voltage element, can be arranged so that the trip current will close if the ratio E/I becomes less than the impedance of the section it is protecting.

What is it?  What is “x”?

  • The voltage is always present Z and is relatively constant but the current varies with the load, and so the torque balance cannot work as you suggest. An electronic version of your idea could work, but only because one can set the trip ratio directly, in other words, an  I*V > than the maximum allowed, or the load impedance is too low. It would be less useful if the PF were also unknown. You are obviously thinking of some old-fashioned WattHour meter kind of arrangement using a Faraday disk. Here you would need to detect excess rotation speed.
