Temporary Power Supply for Construction Site

Would like to request assistance and guidance on requirement for power supply used for construction site.

The site require 0.75MW temporary power supply. Given power source from service provider was from temporary transformer. Hence, was requested to design and construct Compensation Device. Reason, to avoid disruption to Grid.

Is this a common practice? Appreciate if can received schematic concept design and installation method guidance.

  • Who has requested this? -  I'd be inclined to go back for more details of what limit they expect you to work to and what remaining error they will accept. 

    I'm assuming that what is meant here is power factor correction to make the HV side of the transformer look more like a resistance, and less like an inductor. If it is not, then ignore what is written below and come back with more details of what is expected.

     Although from simple transformer theory it usually looks like a series capacitor on the HV side would do, this is not straight forward to arrange.  In real systems shunt capacitance on the LV side can usually be used in a way that is good enough. A complication is that when you substitute shunt for series compensation the capacitor size needed becomes load dependent. Although there are complex systems that switch in more or less capacitance depending on load,  if the load is not too variable, then  a single value is much easier to arrange.

    (And I presume you are not in the UK - here these things tend to be the domain of the DNO, except perhaps at large factories with private transformers, so rather than assume UK practice, what is your HV voltage and earthing arrangement,  as this too may affect the best approach.)

    PS cacpactor sized by setting Xc (=1/(2.pi.F.C))

    such that the amps through it times the volts across match the VA reactive to be compensated
