Community badge names - your help needed!

Hi everyone! The community team are looking at introducing a badge to recognise community members who've made helpful contributions in the community. We've tried out a LOT of names for the badge but none of them really hit the mark - and at this point everything sounds odd. We've looked at things like:

  • Educator
  • Mastermind
  • Megamind
  • Sage
  • Know-it-all

Do any of these strike a chord with you? Any other suggestions? If you prefer you are welcome to send me a private message with your suggestions - I'd love to hear from all community members who have suggestions, including those who prefer reading to posting.

Number of posts is no guarantor whatsoever of worth.

Totally agree. This will be a badge that's assigned based on the answers functionality, and not about the number of answers but whether those in the community find the answers useful. The badge is a nice way to help new community members before they're familiar with all of the folks who contribute here.

Of course we already have number of posts and IET membership badges as part of our profiles. This adds something a bit different.

This community seems to have a pretty small number of active members, and a pretty small number of daily posts. Is it growing?

It's also very awkward to post from my phone, although easy enough to read. Perhaps I'm missing something there? Is there an app? Would I use it?

Seem to me more important issues than issuing gold starts, worthwhile though it may be.

The community is always growing. At the moment around 400 new community members join every month and many thousands more visit and read the contributions here. Many members prefer to read rather than contribute and that's fine, but we've also had feedback that newer community members feel apprehensive about posting. Some of our work behind the scenes is about making the community as welcoming as possible, which these badges play into.

I know posting from a phone isn't the best experience at present. We're working on something to make that easier in future - watch this space :)

It would be a badge, like the 3 you're sporting which tots up your overall contributions..

    Qbit

the number of posts can be more an indicator of narcissism than knowledge, training  and experience.

Allows a new insight to be gained ?

    Mike.

PS luckily I'm not that bothered about the badges, and I suspect not that many of the engineering types are.. !!

PPS  not everything I type is to be taken seriously.

  • @mapj1 I nearly spit my tea ? Absolutely no judgement implied.

Thanks everyone for your help, comments and suggestions. My takeaway from this thread is that:

    1. There's no strength of feeling about terms to avoid

    2. Something more casual is fine, as long as it's not patronising

    3. Some participants in this discussion may not notice any future badges :)

Hi Evanna, in my messages from the IET I have 7 separate notifications between May 2019 and Dec 2020 that I have been awarded a community hero badge, though nothing has ever shown on my profile.

Why is the number of views for each topic only for signed in members, rather than all views?

  • The number of people who find a post useful is no measure of worth either; the primary use of ‘likes’ in social media generally is analytics profiling and manipulation.  ‘Badges’  on a forum under the auspices of the IET - apart from qualification relevant to the subject matter,  which can be declared / included in the profile displayed -  are simply redundant ‘bling’;  users are perfectly capable of making their own judgements on the quality of posts and posters.
  • @Weirdbeard I know you had the award for a bit last year but you shouldn't have had 7 notifications! I'll look into it and message you. The award was temporary so would only have appeared in your profile for a month.

The community can only capture info from logged-in participants so can only display logged in views.

@Qbit I think a lot of regular community members will just ignore the badge and that's fine. It'll be useful for some and less for others, which is pretty typical.

Thanks for the reply Evanna, at no point was I made aware that the badge was temporary! I was hoping it might be a level 7 community hero badge by now? :)

Out of interest how do you know there are thousands of non logged-in viewers if you can only  capture info from logged-in  participants?

  • @Weirdbeard not too far to go :) I messaged you the details about your badge notifications - sorry about the confusion.

We get information about overall visitors from Google. It's startling to see the difference between the views we see logged here and in Google.

This thread has well and truly gone off-topic, but I'm happy to answer any questions about the gubbins of the community over in the feedback and comments category.
