Anglian events - education or entertainment?

The planners on the local committee are busily trying to think of & organise interesting events for our members, and would appreciate some guidance on where to focus our efforts.

It seems that entertaining events, such as those involving steam trains, beer cheeky, bows & arrows and suchlike draw a much larger audience than weighty academic & technical topics. We have the opportunity to put on lectures & training surprise on technical topics, training on CAD tools, how-tos and advice that might help us in our jobs. Is this of interest to our audience?

Personally I would like to see a mixture of events.

    1. I have recently taken on the role of IET industry representative for BT Innovate and Design and would like to see somethings which enable new members to join and find mentors for professional registration. This needs to cover ICTTech through to CEng.

    2. I think putting on relevant knowledge sharing opportunities would be good - especially if this covers both industry and academia.

    3. I think it would be good to see something in the area of running local competitions. Anything from "robot wars" through "the apprentice" to "present a paper" - this should hopefully help engineering and technology be fun for people.

    4. The recent presentations on digital radio and fusion have also been good and I would like to see more of the same.

    5. I'm looking forward to the "beer" evening this month too.

    Hope that helps.

    regards
