''When the Minister arrives, he looks uncomfortable. After exchanging pleasantries, he tells you what is on his mind. It transpires that several... of the site supervisors with whom Ananya is due to meet have been in touch with him. They had not realised that the new project manager for the second city was to be a woman, and are concerned that this will cause problems. You are aware that it is very unusual for a woman to be working as a manager in this country, and that attitudes to gender equality are not what they are in the west, but had assumed that any difficulty would be manageable once the workers came to see how good a manager Ananya is. However, it seems the problem is worse than you had thought. The Minister explains that there is a real danger that the local engineers and construction workers will refuse to work for a woman. He is anxious to explain that he does not share their views himself, but says you must understand that these cultural attitudes are deeply embedded and don’t change easily. He advises you not to bring Ananya out, and suggests you find a suitable male project manager instead.''
