X Factor technology show - Could this be the push that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) need?

It seems that these days, everybody wants to be an actor, singer or dancer and why not?  The media portray it to be such a desirable pursuit with life changing rewards, opportunities and success in abundance.

Shows like the X Factor captivate people from a young age and have the power to influence them to pursue a career in the entertainment business.

Could an X Factor - type show, aimed at technology be the answer to raising the profile of STEM careers, influencing children from an early age and altering their perceptions?

Simon Cowell and will.i.am might put together an X Factor technology show

It would be interesting to read you comments on this.
  • What impact would it have on the Faraday Programme, The Engineering Education Scheme or Young Engineers for Britain?

Would it diminsh the amount of time and effort that has gone into making these programmes so successful?

Surely more should be done to support what already exists rather than replicating or creating anything new. Maybe there should be far more joined up thinking and collaborative effort between the organisations that are already doing this.
  • I agree with Dawn, what we need is more joined up thinking with the initiatives that are already out there, I have a list of over 45 initiatives aimed at increasing interest in STEM on my desk just now, and thats just the tip of the iceberg!
