If so, what difference has this made to your career?

Has it opened any doors for you or, do you feel that you could have had the same success, without professional registration?

  • I agree with Diana's points in singling out one or two people and work with them, if there is a specific or local issue.

The problem is wider when you are working across different companies/sites where you only have a short contact with people.  Especially in EU where most engineers do not receive their "qualification" until they are in their thirties.

Having a professional accreditation or showing you are working towards this helps - alot - as often these are recognised across boundaries.  In some cases it can be as simple as having a title on your business cards (in Germany this is often the case) that states you are an engineer.

Another point in working in EU countries is how your image works from your own ompany or department.  Are you working or sent out alone or with a team.  Are you the team or visit or project leader?  If your own company gives you responsibility this is also a clear demonstration of their confidence in your abilties and can help build your image with others.

If you want to discuss in details or talk about your experiences, please feel free to IM or message me seperately.
