Cool science and Electrickery (Coolscience Sunday in Ottawa)

Once again the IET Ottawa LN and PEO Ottawa chapter teamed up to assist in Ottawa's Cool Science Sunday. Boy it was cool in the very literal sense at -23C with another -12C windchill we braved the elements to inspire young Canadian engineers in building siege machine and catapults out of pegs, Ice lolly sticks, rubber bands and plastic spoons.

Once prototyping their designs the little engineers went out onto the makeshift firing range and adjust their designs for distance and height.  Lots of happy faces, puzzled parents and a great effort by the PEO and IET. One young lad went away with a valuable lesson; you can add elastic bands to get more power but watch out for the weakest component and catastophic failures. He will go far no doubt.

Our neighbours were exhibiting non newtonian fluids on a loudspeaker, ferro fluids and magnets and unnervingly across the hall was a number of snakes, including the Ontario black rat snake (see attached). Truly a venue which is growing in strength year by year.

Here's one we finished earlier. No prizes for style, its all function before form!

The little engineers engrossed in siege engine manufacture. Oswlado and Dirk are helping out as volunteers. Thanks guys.

Super power trebuchet hits above the target. Some fine tuning required.

Oswaldo the graduate Environmental Engineer , originally from Peru, handles the snake! Just glad I am an electrical engineer! One of the handlers stated that the Pythons were cold and were gripping more tightly around the neck - Hmm very comforting.

John Hazel , chair of PEO Ottawa chapter helps line up the siege engines and assists in targetting on the firing range.
