LN Committee work wasn’t completely alien to me having been the secretary for the Leeds IEE Younger Member’s Committee a number of years ago whilst I was still at University studying E&E Eng. However, that involvement petered out when I left Leeds and moved to Swindon to start work at Motorola (I’ve been involved in telecommunications ever since). Even so, I continued to work my way towards chartered status, which I achieved with the kind help of Derek Bateman (who you will see is still an active member of our committee). This was even though my arm was in a plaster cast at the time of the interview, making handshaking rather awkward!
Even though I’ve only been with the committee a relatively short time I’ve found it a very worthwhile experience. This is particularly as a consequence of the great set of people on the committee and Ray’s excellent helmsmanship. Hosting events, such as “Engineers Question Time”, has been truly remarkable. I’ve also enjoyed the responsibility of judging the regional finals of the Present Around the World Competition and being given the opportunity to attend the recent UK Communities Together 2012 volunteers weekend at Savoy Place (slides and presentation can be found here). It’s also been a great way to steer the events programme in the Swindon area, where I pushed for our upcoming event regarding getting Wiltshire Online.
My most recent activity has been with regards to utilisation of the IET’s MyCommunity social media tool by the Swindon LN, where I’m one of the administrators for our site. Although sceptical to start with, I have to now say that I’m coming round to it and believe it does provide us with an opportunity to better engage with our local members – if you’re reading this, then I hope you agree. Regardless your comments, or suggestions, are more than welcome.
I hope to meet you at one of our events soon.
