My name is Liz and I'm a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Leeds researching telecommunications during the First World War. The project I'm working on at the moment is "Innovating in Combat: Telecommunications and intellectual property in the First World War" and more details are available on our project website at blogs.mhs.ox.ac.uk/.../
My undergraduate degree was in Computer Engineering and my background in engineering informs my work, whether it is an understanding of the underlying engineering principles or an engineering approach to research. Much of what I research is history of engineering and I use the skills I gained as an engineer on a daily basis.
I guess I am evidence that a degree in engineering can lead to some pretty unusual places!
I joined the IET in 2009 when I began my PhD in history of science - I had been to a few IET events prior to this and was working on material held by IET archives as part of my PhD. I have made good use of my membership, regularly attending IET events and I became a member of the IET History of Technology committee in 2011.
