How do you rate your broadband service and speed?

This question seemed rather relevant with this year’s Appleton lecture (6th Feb) covering superfast broadband (to be broadcast on IET.tv) and Wiltshire’s £35.6m broadband deal just having been signed. Wiltshire County Council are putting a lot of effort into upgrading our broadband speed through the Wiltshire Online initiative (see our related event: 14th May), but is there actually a problem to solve? Is your area covered by the upgrade plan (rollout map)? Is there enough choice of provider? Can you get the services you require? Were you aware of the Wiltshire Online initiative?

  • I have to say looking back the service offered by Virgin was very good, having now moved out of their coverage area. Out in the sticks, I find the basic broadband service adequate, but am disappointed not to be able to at least get BT infinity (with BT being the only available provider). Listening to Steve Unger (CTO Ofcom) present at the IET Appleton lecture earlier this week was encouraging, especially with regards to the planned reframing of the 700MHz TV spectrum by 2018 for broadband services. However, given our current mobile coverage, I can't help but feel what's needed is a copper upgrade, rather than wireless solution.
