The IET Women’s Network Facilitated Peer Coaching -

In collaboration with Sagent Recruitment.

The IET Women’s Network is pleased to announce the start of monthly peer-group sessions, facilitated by Greet Brosens of Sagent Recruitment.

About Greet Brosens

Greet has worked in leaderships positions in the recruitment industry for the last 18 years, both in the UK and mainland Europe. She has been able to follow many professionals and executives as they change jobs and develop careers. She is passionate about people and their development, and has been fortunate to work with some amazing professionals from the start of their career to executive positions. Greet has a degree in Economics from Leuven University and a Masters in Law and Economics from Oxford University. Greet is also an accredited senior coaching practitioner.

About Sagent Recruitment

Michele Garrigan and Greet Brosens set up Sagent Recruitment in 2012 to offer a different recruitment service to engineering professionals. They believe that at its heart, great recruitment requires gravitas, insight and the ‘art of conversation’. The newest technology and most extensive database are useless without the skill to engage with candidates at a personal level. Standing out in what has become an often blandly uniform, numbers-driven industry, the team at Sagent make sure that candidates are treated as unique individuals who have something to say.

About the Session

Sagent Recruitment would like to invite 10 female IET members to a series of facilitated peer coaching sessions, held in Savoy Place, London. Each session will be 2 hours.

NB: Numbers are strictly limited to foster a confidential and respectful environment.

“The lack of women in general, and the lack of women mentors make engineering a lonely field for women to want to stay in.”

This is the answer one female engineer gave when asked the question: “Why do women leave engineering?”

Around 15% of all engineering graduates in the UK are female, yet only 6.9% of all practising engineers are women. Why do women leave the profession?

Some of the reasons suggested in the available research:

· Lack of confidence in their engineering ability

· Lack of ability to juggle multiple life roles

· Lack of clarity regarding work goals, objectives and career prospects

· Lack of corporate support for training and development

Through peer coaching, female engineers working in different organisations can share ideas, learn from each other and build a network of peers. In a supportive, inclusive coaching environment, participants learn to ask incisive questions of each other and reflect on their behaviours and challenges in the work place.

Whilst it is recommended that you attend all six sessions, to gain the most benefit, there is no strict commitment and you will not lose your place if you are unable to attend one of the sessions.

Timings and Location

The coaching sessions will run once per month, for six sessions, with the first in the series starting on Tuesday, May 7th 2013 from 18:00 – 21:00 at The IET: London, 2 Savoy Place WC2R 0BL

Registration Whilst the event is free to attend, registration is still required, to secure your place.

to register, please contact womensnetwork@theiet.org

All of the sessions are free of charge.

    Good morning all,

The facilitated peer coaching sessions have been completed so, I thought that I would pass on the comments from the facilitator, Greet Brosens of Sagent Recruitment:

I would just like to thank Greet for her dedication to our members.  It is very much appreciated and I hope that we can continue to work together.

I would also like to thank those of you that attended the sessions and contributed to the group.

    Dear all,

Thank you for those of you who made it to our last coaching session last night. It was a fairly short session, and we shared some ideas on how to continue to coach after the series.

I hope that you have been able to pick up some tips on how to coach yourself, in the moment, and how you can build a support network for peer coaching purposes.

    Tip 1:

Regarding self coaching, it is important to remember your feelings. When you are doing something, and it is associated with a certain feeling, often uncomfortable, take a moment to consider this feeling. Why are you feeling that way? What is making you uncomfortable? Taking the time to do this can help you behave differently. Often, our behaviour is a result of our feelings, instead of our thinking. Taking the time to consider these feelings and think about them can have a real impact on your behaviour.

    Tip 2:

Keep up the peer coaching. Coaching is about asking questions that can change the way someone thinks. Often, our thinking and behaviour is led by limiting assumptions about our ability. Asking the right questions can help people remove those limiting assumptions and change their thinking and behaviour. I would urge you to keep talking to each other, and continue sharing your stories and ask for input and ideas!

We had a lot of changes within the group since we started in the spring. One person found a job in the Cambridge area, another changed employer as will one of the other delegates soon. Somebody got promoted, and another can finally share her project! I will leave it up to her to send you the details, but it is quite exciting.

Lastly, I would like to remind you of the services that we offer. I would appreciate it if you could recommend us to your organisations or relationships.

In a nutshell, we provide engineering recruitment for degree educated experienced engineers in defence, aerospace, energy, product development and the built environment.

We also provide consultancy services with Sagent Solutions. This business helps organisations attract and retain female engineers. Our consultancy reviews recruitment processes to detect bias in the decision making process, we make recommendations and offer training to recruiters and hiring managers in unconscious bias. We speak to women’s groups, provide training and coaching services to female engineers.

I hope that we can stay in touch. I am sure that I will continue to run into some of you at networking events at the IET or elsewhere. I wish you all the best in your careers.

    Very best wishes,
