Engineering Institutions and Extra Curricular Activities

Hi,

I have been asked to do a talk at work to our professional growth network on the 14th August about young people in engineering, the instituions available and extra curricular activities we can get involved in.

As part of this I need to cover Power & Generation, Mining, Project Management, Highways and Rail. So  I was wondering whether anyone in any of those fields could shed any light on the institutions (other than the IET) that they are involved with and anything extra cirricular they particapte in e.g. STEM ambassador, YRP ambassador, Engineering Enrichment Project etc.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

    Hi Kate,

Thats great. I  too am a STEM ambassador and I love doing it!

Could you tell me more about the RAE grants?? I too am passionate about increasing the number of females in STEM :) and the more schemes we can find to get  people involved in the more chance we have of inspiring women into STEM! So I'm hoping I can use this presentation to promote that too and get more people at work involved!!!

Also I've heard about the Big Bang Events... never been too one. Could you provide more information about that???

If you are in the energy industry.. are you a member of the Energy Institute?? or is there another more popular one??

    Thank you :D

I'm not in any of the fields you are interested in and am a member of just the IET and WISE.  I am a STEM ambassador, but have also been envolved in some school workshops through the Primary Engineer scheme (http://primaryengineer.com/) as the result of an initiative at work.  This is another worthwhile activity for encouraging future generations of engineers!

I hope you get the rest of the info you need soon...

    Hi,

Thats great Lois thank you. I will have a look round the website. Hopefully my talk will encourage some of the other engineers at work to get involved in events and initiatives like this just like I do :) I hadnt heard of that one so thank you for bringing it to my attention :)

Hi Sinead, I'm goood thanks and yourself?

Yes I think I will be but thats just how I like it :)

Thats great you should definitely look into it... if you google STEMNet and have a look around the website you would be able to find out more and just ping an email across. They are normally really good at getting back to you! Its great fun!!!

Fab thank you :) I'd been struggling for Power as I found a list on Wikipedia but there didnt seem to be a power one! So thank you so much :D
