Hi,



Although not based in Kent,  I do tend spend the schools holidays nr Margate.



During the Summer holiday period I met with Stu Ellins (former CEO of Young Engineers). Stuart is presently running a Young Engineers Club at Marlowe Academy, Margate and would welcome support from IET members (I am looking to support through my day job during the Summer holiday period nxt year). The support can come in many forms, from speaking to Club members or by offering to help with Club projects.

    I know Marlowe Academy as I have attended a careers event there with my IET stand, plus they entered a team in the Faraday Challenge last year.  I have a presentation that I have titled “Engineers Don’t Stand Still” that I could deliver at the club – but it is more careers orientated.  The theme of my talk is that Engineering is a career of constant change and change delivers opportunities.  I have an old fashioned “reel to reel” tape recorder and say that this was my iPod at their age.  I also have valves, transistors, an electro-mechanical switch from telephone exchange – plus a modern equivalent from a digital exchange.  The last time I gave the talk I concluded by having the (small) audience making the IET torches.  However, with regret I cannot give regular support as it is the other side of the County to me and a round trip of some 135 miles.  I undertake all of my STEM Ambassador activities through Kent & Medway STEM (kentandmedwaystem@canterbury.ac.uk - 01227 782662).  I suggest that the school should submit their requirement to them for it to be included on their activities requirements list.  Also – nearby is Cummins Diesel Engine company, who do a lot of good work in the area for education – they are IMechE people.   Brian Dury SLO IET Kent
