Are you a specialist or generalist?

This article questions whether employers want employees with specialist or generalist skills http://careers.theguardian.com/careers-blog/specialist-generalist-what-do-employers-want

Which do you consider yourself to be? Do you think it has changed over time?
  • This article raises an interesting point, reading through UK-SPEC it seems to lend itself to needing to be a knowledge specialist and also engage in leadership or management but I would not suggest that professional engineers are generalists in the sense that many of them have in-depth and knowledge in some niche areas.

Would be interesting to see what other members think of this...
  • I am both, if that does not sound like a contradiction. I am an electrical engineer working on heritage building stock and as such I specialise in lighting, fire alarms systems and lightning/surge protection plus all matters connected with electrical systems but I have enough knowledge to comment and advise end users/clients on a wide range of other topics such as heating, ventilation, and public health matters.
