How can The IET better assist local businesses?

Question - What actions might the IET Solent Local Network take in order to be more beneficial to local Engineering and Technology businesses?

This online discussion has been created to capture ideas from and promote discussions with local Engineering and Technology businesses prior to, during, and following a face-to-face discussion on 30th January 2014 (here).

If you are involved with such a business in the Solent Area then we are keen to hear your views!

  • What do we (the Solent LN) already cover?

    • Career development in the form of professional registration workshops, Lifeskills events (negotiation, management, presentation skills, assertion...), mentoring services...

    • Talks and technical visits...

    • Young professionals events, competitions and workshops...

  • We are looking to collate practical ideas (what), with identified benefits (why) and an idea of how to begin developing them (how)...

  • How can we better tailor our events to help SMEs with networking, business growth and expansion of their skillsets?

Perhaps a two-way relationship between the local network and local SMEs. Currently the LN arranges events that Might be of interest. Perhaps a more successful approach would be for the SMEs to suggest (and even volunteer) events that Will be of interest.

How can we better reach and communicate with local SMEs?

Solicited e-mails from the Local Network. Improve publicity of future events at the current event.
  • We could...

    • Provide knowledge transfer / peer forum events for local business in order to help businesses grow / share challenges / solve problems.

    • Grow a two-way engagement in order to establish the demand for events.

    • Better publicise programme of events, especially Lifeskills, in order to help smaller businesses with staff development.

    • Improve communications.

    • Promote business partners scheme at local events in order to expand local business network through the IET LN.

    • Promote LN events to BP to help reach out to staff.

    • Plot business and members on a map, for example, in order to provide ready information about local organisations.

    • Relaying IET.tv events live to local venues in order to encourage networking with the backbone of an interesting topic.

    • Better integrate the SMEs with the local Universities in order to a) promote the SMEs to potential future employees and b) expand the learning and understanding of the students by witnessing real-world applications of their studies.
