  • Hi Lisa,

I am sure others will have some good ideas but here are some of mine:

    (1) A debate: Get a panel of experts, have initial short presentations from each expert then allow the audience to ask questions. There are many current topics affecting engineering to choose from such as

    (a) 'CrossRail',

    (b)'Road Pricing, Tolls and Parking',

(c)'Energy Supply' including smart metering, electric cars,

    (d) Nuclear energy, winds, tidal energy,

    (e) 'Internet Issues: Net Neutrality', net freedom, spying, government interference,

    (f) 'Global Warming', 'Population Growth and its Implications',

    (g) 'Heathrow expansion, the Engineering point of View'

    (g) Political hot topics 'How to Solve the UK Heating Bills Problem'.

Several elections and referenda are not far off and a controversial political 'hot-potato' would certainly get the IET noticed! It should be possible to get some real facts and figures instead of the usual hype and things to feel guilty about

    (2) Short lecture + barbecue

    (3) A short lecture + a trip on a boat down the Thames

    (4) An astronomy topic 'Space exploration, the Problem of Communicating with the Voyager Probes'

    (5) An IET Kent  v IMechE Kent cricket, football or bowls match

    - Generally the problem is not finding the ideas for events but getting someone to organise them.

    Regards,

    Rob H.
