Are you a female engineer who is passionate about your job? Can you spare an hour or two to inspire the next generation of engineers?

Tomorrow’s Engineers Week will take place between 3 and 7 November 2014 to create a buzz around engineering and promote engineering careers to young people across the UK. To mark the week, the IET is planning an exciting new campaign to encourage female engineer ‘role models’ to go into schools around the UK to tell young people why they should consider a career in engineering.
We’re looking for dynamic, inspiring and enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to go into a local school and share their experiences of studying STEM subjects and working as a professional engineer.
Our aim is to demonstrate to school children, and particularly to girls, that engineering is an exciting, diverse and creative career with great prospects.
We have a variety of tools and presentations that you can use during your visit – or you may simply want to go in and tell your own inspirational story about why you chose to be an engineer – and what you did to get there.
We’re particularly interested in finding female role models because we want to inspire more girls to study engineering-related subjects: only 7% of the current engineering workforce is female, the lowest percentage in Europe. But if you’re a male engineer who fulfils the above criteria, we would love to hear from you too.
We are starting work now to identify role models and schools – and hope to match as many as we can. Obviously there is a possibility that we may be unable to match every role model with a school, but we’ll certainly do our best.
Currently, we have the following school locations are available:
Harrow
London
Horbury
Leicester
Chippenham
Harlow
Harefield
Cardiff
Sunderland
Please let me know if you are available to visit a school in this area by emailing womensnetwork@theiet.org
