Guided Walk - Light Up the Ladies Bridge
Former Community Member
The organisers of Totally Thames - Light Up the Ladies Bridge; are offering the chance to go on the blue badge guided walk they have commissioned for Friday 23rd at 3PM. As they have limited spaces available for this I do need to know names of those who wish to come by end of Tuesday 20th.
GUIDED WALK
Friday 23rd September 3 pm meet by stone circle to the east of Waterloo Bridge South bank - finish back at Waterloo Bridge 5 pm
The Ladies Along The River - women have always worked alongside the Thames in London but their stories are often overlooked. They all added to London's economy (and a few to its buildings)in various ways, and this walk takes in some of the lesser known as well as the more famous ( or infamous ). From Mrs Coade to Julia Barfield ; Lady Margaret Sandhurst, Emma Cons and Susan Lawrence ( pioneers all of London Local Government ) to Jean Symons and Alison Smithson, women architects in the 1950s. They all watched the Thames flow by as they worked. Then there are many whose names are lost , like those who toiled on the re-building of Waterloo Bridge and the nameless women who walked along Bankside when Shakespeare was declaiming at the Globe, searching for clients.. Winchester's Geese. This walk is a homage to them all.
Please e-mail me at womensnetwork@theiet.org by 16:30 today if you would like to be added to the list.
