Ok I know this is a bit late. But welcome to all new members. If there are any questions regarding Professional Engineer and licencing then feel free to ask. I am personally licensed for Ontario, so other provinces I have less knowledge on the exact differences but they have similarity. I have added some links in the group to help IET members navigate a path to licensure. Please note, I do not speak on behalf of Professional Engineers of Ontario, there are official channels to communicate with if you are seeking guidance and would recommend this, but the group was created as a forum to help internally to the IET. Any suggestions, questions are always welcome.
Hi Alex, thanks for the great question. Working in the Ottawa Chapter , this is probably the number #1 hurdle that people face. I have just placed a gentleman with a local company who in fact suffers the same problem; they do work in the safety critical software arena and have no licenced Engineers. This in itself throws serious legal issues if not rectified. However the individual has taken steps to resolve and the chapter is working to assist him; he will then be able to oversee other engineers getting licenced.
What you need to be looking for is a "monitor". He basically sits with you for 30 hours a month for an entire year ( I think 30 hours is not mandatory - it may be an agreed time period; ONtario is not that clear) and ensures what you are doing will meet the terms of the licence. Its very similar arrangement to that of the EIT ( Engineer- In-Training) and the Guide ( Mentor) arrangement.
As first steps contact your local chapter and speak to the person who runs the licencing commitee locally. Tell them you need a monitor and ask them to send out an email to the members requesting candidates. Once you have some names you can then get the chapter and yourself to pick a likely match. I was very concerned that I wouldn't get any monitor's applying, I got two to choose from and we now have a very successful relationship going. To say this gentlemen is highly valued is an understatement, the fact that he gives his time voluntarily shows his dedication to the profession. The chapter should recognise this later on. Some caution here as APEGBC, may have different rules and times, check with your chapter but hopefully you can get something going with them.
One final thought, make sure your company knows what you are doing and see if you can get support. You probably need a room for the monitor, IT support and good supply of coffee and food. This person is giving free time so anything to entice them in will always help when you send out the email request. Best of luck in your adventure.
