Newcastle City Council has been named the most LGBT inclusive employer in the UK. It marks the first time a local authority has ranked top in equality charity Stonewall’s top 100 list assessing how employers treat their LGBT staff. Stonewall researched more than 500 companies, with 109,933 members of staff taking part in a feedback questionnaire.
It says "more employers than ever are taking LGBT inclusion seriously", but says its research also shows that more than a third of LGBT staff have hidden their identity for fear of discrimination, while one in eight trans people have been physically attacked by a customer or colleague.
