Accelerator roadmaps: European Strategy for Particle Physics update

The European Strategy for Particle Physics Update (EPPSU), which was published in June, includes recommendations for the development of two roadmaps; an Accelerator R&D roadmap focused on critical technologies and Detector R&D Roadmap Panel. The first of these is being developed by the Laboratories Directors Group and the second by ECFA.

The work on these roadmaps will be getting underway soon and whilst we don’t have too much detail at the moment of timescales and exact nature of the activities it seems likely that the accelerator R&D roadmap will cover 5 areas;
  • High field magnets – 16T and beyond

  • High temperature superconductors (HTS) with an option to reach 20T

  • Plasma acceleration schemes

  • Design study for muon collider

  • High-intensity, multi turn energy recovery linacs

and the Detector R&D roadmap is likely to cover 8 areas;

  • Quantum devices

  • Solid state devices

  • Photon detectors

  • Gaseous/liquid detectors

  • Calorimetry

  • Electronics DAQ & Trigger

  • Integration

  • Training

We recognise the importance of having good input from the UK in these activities and being able to call on those with strong expertise in these areas which will support Dave Newbold through the Laboratories Directors Group and Stewart Boogert, who is the UK representative on RECFA.

If you feel that you have the right expertise and are interested in being involved in these activities please get in touch with us by way of the ppap@stfc.ac.uk email address explaining why you would like to be considered as soon as possible and by 13 September at the latest.

These forthcoming activities highlight the importance of committees such as ECFA and their relevance to the development of the programme so please do think about responding to the ECFA call for nominations.
