Transitioning at work - seeking guidance for leadership

Hey folks!

It's my first time posting on the IET forums so first a little context. I'm Chris, CTO & Co Founder of a startup working in the electric vehicle space (check out https://ev.energy if you want to learn more ?) We have been going 2 years, and earlier this year we founded our LGBTQ+ network. Our first 'act' as a network was to sign up for the Trans Rights Are Human Rights campaign, and it only seems fitting the first thing we work on internally is a Transitioning at Work policy. We don't currently have any self-identifying trans folks in our business, and whilst I have some experience in LGBTQ+ networks and activism, however, I think that without some Trans and Non-Binary perspectives our policy may fall short.

I wanted to ask the community if anyone would be interested in collaborating with us to develop this policy as "Open Source" HR materials to be shared back (through this community, and on our website). The intention would be that anyone could use the policy as a starting point or off-the-shelf for free, and perhaps we would ask for a donation to a charity focussing on Trans issues (e.g. Mermaids) in recognition of the work which has gone into developing the document.

Also, I would love to hear back from anyone who has successfully developed policies like these, experienced the good, bad and ugly of policies and processes elsewhere, and if anyone has existing resources off the shelf that I've missed, please point me in that direction!

    Hi Chris,

It's my first time on the forums too but thought I'd reply. Back in the day when I used to work for bp, I know they were doing some work on trans inclusion guidelines. One of the key people involved was Bobbi Pickard - she's a Mermaid's Trustee and the Trans in the City Founder. I'd recommend reaching out to her (perhaps on LinkedIn?) - she might be able to point you in the right direction in terms of folks doing more in this area!
  • I've transitioned at my last workplace, and helped there with policy, and things went south when they didn't take the community's advice and got it badly wrong. I'm happy to discuss and help. I probably have a copy of what I did at the time that you could have as a good starter for ten.

I'm a little busy so will try to find time to dig it out this weekend. Please do pm me and remind me if I forget.
