Nigel Fine mentioned in his recent blog post that he’d recently spoken with a teacher from an academy where engineering was being taught. Having spent many years managing the Engineering Engagement Grant Scheme for the IET and IMechE I’ve come across many schools doing marvelous work.

One particularly memorable junior school participated in a county-wide space-themed education project. The school prided itself on pupil-led learning – teachers introduce the concepts that need to be learned and the pupils choose the context – an eye-opening way to see children learning. The pupils worked in teams to programme a robot arm, build a ‘moonscape’ to navigate, video their ‘missions’, and present their results. The pupils chose their own roles and tasks according to their interests and were ultimately very blasé about this amazing learning they were doing.
