XLPE Vs XLPO Cables

Which is better? These cables/wires are to to installed as internal wiring in the low voltage switchgears and distribution boards for marine application

I'm more familiar with XLPE Cables, but the vendor has offered XLPO insulated cables but the spec calls for XLPE; Just I thought if XLPO is better than XLPE, I can very well use it if the cost is lower.

  • Well actually XLPE  (polythene ) is one example of an XLPO (polyolefin  ), but so is polypropylene and there are some types of synthetic rubbers which also fall into that class.

If you are offered an XPLO insulated cable, please ask the supplier which one it is, or compare the material specs very carefully.

Polyolefin is broad category, not a specific formulation.

In contrast polythene is well defined as that plastic made by sticking lots of ethane molecules together into long chains.
