It's a sign that the country is being run by old fogeys and stroppy reactionaries who hate anything European, even the measurement system (because it was originated in France).
When I went to primary school in the early 1970's we were taught metric first, and imperial afterwards if there was time. That's 50 years ago. Whole generations have grown up since then, all using metric.
We were brought up on Imperial or "English" as we called it back then.
Then we changed to decimal currency before I left School and this new SI (Metric) system was coming in so we learned in bits and bobs about this new fangled system of measures and were fairly fluent in both disciplines. We could even do arithmetic in our heads or on the back of paper bags with a pencil.
the 12 times tables were king.
we even knew what farthings were too and you`d always know somebody who actually had one
