The future of Trucking

Changing demand patterns with e-commerce that has increased the need for personalized deliveries and reverse logistics, policy mandates driving the environmental sustainability and traffic safety agendas, fuel price volatility and new opportunities offered by technological advances are driving transportation companies and truck OEMs to work together to re-imagine the future of trucking. Connected, Autonomous and Electric trucks are on the roadmap of all OEMs, but they will be adopted (because of different safety, TCO, and organizational change barriers) at different speed.

What is the IET community's view on the different horizons of adoption of Connected, Autonomous, Electric trucking? What are the good practices that are emerging, both in terms of technology adoption and new business models enabled by technology advances?

  • I expect a lot more use of electric goods vehicles. Both 100% battery, and also powered from overhead wires like a trolley bus.

As regards fully self driving vehicles I am more doubtful. Society is simply not ready for them.

Child killed by manually operated vehicle "Oh dear, what a sad accident" Penalties are generally fairly mild due to the "there but for the grace of God went I" Factor.

Child killed by self driving vehicle "My child was killed by the wicked fat cat corporation that made the vehicle" Compensation of many millions demanded. "ban killer trucks"
