What challenges have you come across regarding decarbonising transport?

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced ambitious plans to decarbonise the transport system and meet the Government’s target of ensuring the UK achieves net zero carbon emissions across the board by 2050. To do this, it will require significant advancements in technology and research collaboration. There are still many obstacles that need to be overcome and the IET’s Transport Panel sought to get an idea of the scale of this challenge.

We had the pleasure of teaming up with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) this year to run a looking into the whole life cycle of decarbonisation in transport. It brought together experts from across academia, government and industry to discuss what progress has been made and what challenges still lie ahead across all areas of transport and infrastructure.

The workshop not only sought to address one of the IET’s key areas of focus, sustainability and climate change, but also was timely to feed into the EPSRC’s Net Zero Showcase, taking place this week, online and in Glasgow. Ultimately, helping us to understand the research and innovation requirements necessary to meet the 2050 targets.

We have produced a short flyer to give you a flavour of the upcoming report from the workshop, due to be published this summer. It highlights how crucial research is to this journey, focussing on the need to replace, remove and reduce so we can develop, discover and deploy, at scale.

  • The two big problems with 'non fossil fuel' transport are long haul and off road.

    Urban delivery can easily be carried out with EVs. Many on here will remember electric milk floats etc. There are a few examples of electric refuse collection vehicles, again no problem as they are defined route.

    Long haul freight with EVs, unless you have swapable batteries, is a non starter. There are some experiments in Germany with trucks charging from overhead wires.

    Almost anything off road, construction, agriculture, etc is also impractical. The vehicles are usually left on site overnight so some very subtantial temporary supplies would be required. Large tractors, diggers, tippers, etc have drives of a few 100kW which will often be expected to work 12 hr shifts. A trailer tank of diesel solves all the problems. Hill farmers have a similar problem, they would  need a 10km extension cable to replace walking up the hill with a jerrycan of diesel.

    EVs have found a niche in certain quarries where there is a loaded decent which is used to charge the batteries for the empty accent.

  • To wholly 'decarbonnise' is impossible. How will the materials utilized in the production of any vehicle be replaced and with what? Vehicles made of straw and wood? And that's before we even get to the energy expended in the raw materials extraction process. We would have to revert to Nepalese style porterage to move anything if we went down the carbon-free route.

  • Thanks for posting, Roger, yes, long haul and off road can bring additional challenges to make decarbonisation more complex.

  • Yes, whjohnson, materials used in production are a big part and important when considering the whole life cycle. We may have to think of new approaches to transport.
