Hydraulic System Design - Pressure Equipment Directive

Does the Pressure Equipment Directive need to be considered when designing and operating a hydraulic system? The design does not contain any gas accumulators. Currently the system is being designed with regard to the Machinery Directive as actuators and lifting points are being integrated. What standards might I consider if the system is to be CE/UKCA marked?

Kindest Regards,

PLS

  • I'm not going to claim to be an expert in this, but have just been overseeing a similar exercise (again for systems without accumulators) which identified the following:

    • The Pressure Equipment Regulations 1999 - CE/UKCA marking requirements
    • SI 2000/No.128, The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000
    • ISO 4413 - Hydraulic fluid power — General rules and safety requirements for systems and their components, 3rd edition, 2010

I'll watch this with interest to see if there are any further comments.

    Thanks,

    Andy

  • Hi Andy, thank you for your comment, it is my understanding that the hydraulic fluid is not a 'relevant fluid' - the system will have no 'stored' energy. We have used the PER in the past to demonstrate some SEP. I wouldn't expect to involve a Notified Body and hence generate a Written Scheme of Examination under the PSSR...but I could be wrong. I have suggested as you document, that the BS EN ISO 4413 is a good starting point.
