Lithium Battery Fire.

Bristol University physics student, 20, died in fire after lithium batteries in his laptop exploded | Daily Mail Online

  • OEM battery, or chinese fake ?

  • A tragedy, and fortunately quite rare. There are a lot more fires with batteries that are not fatal.

a real or fake lithium battery can still be an accelerator once the fire starts - as suggested here the battery my not have been the original source, but even so may well  have turned a small fire into something far more lethal.

If anything a cheap fake with smaller cells in is likely to bring less energy to the fire than a big one. However the risk of self ignition during overload is reduced in good designs by having internal current limiting  protection and thermal trips -which are often omitted in cheaper designs, especially in vaping kits where there have been quite a few  accidents - some hundred or so over the last 5 years resulting in hospital ..

And for comparison some US figures on vapes are here

  • Hi,
I'm sorry to hear and it's a big and sad disaster.

It is very important to note:

    • significantly damaged or distorted
    • Battery heats up when turned off
    • Battery leakage
    • Melting points on the computer body
    • Cells identified as damaged by a system
    • Batteries that weigh more than their normal weight
