Agreed, placing hot ashes into a wooden cupboard and not related to electrical equipment except perhaps VERY indirectly. Very typical safety standards as found in the hospitality industry. "presentation standards" and minimising staff hours are FAR more important than actual safety.

A much safer approach would be to leave the ashes well alone in the fireplace, until the next morning, when firstly they are probably cold and safe, and secondly can be removed directly to the open air. A really good manager would notice that the night staff are being paid to "do nothing" all night and should be found things to do that save staff hours the next morning.

The fire shown in the video might have been extinguished by prompt and effective use of fire extinguishers.

If fire is suspected, leave the cupboard door shut, a wooden door should resist fire for some minutes. Then call the fire brigade, and operate the fire alarm. The MAYBE tackle the fire with several extinguishers.

Indeed the use of several 6 or 9 litre water extinguishers may have put the fire out at the beginning. The staff were not properly trained in the use of fire extinguishers it appears.
