Interesting post from UR
As would have been said by tobacco farmers, asbestos miners, and whalers.
Smoking is pleasurable, but not otherwise beneficial. Asbestos used to be used widely, but its dangers were not immediately apparent (like tobacco). Prior to the advent of mineral oil, where else could you get good quality oils from? Castor.
Question of the day: why is Humbrol paint so called?
You mean the Humber Oil Company being Yorkshire born I recognize this immediately.
Actually they mention this on their website

Ah yes, but that's only part of the story. Hull was known for fish (at least until the last cod war in 1976), but before that it was a whaling town and that's why there was an oil industry there.
(I grew up there and Father was born there, that's how I know.)
Fortunately not our problem to solve (except indirectly as voters) as it's the type of problem engineers are really bad at solving (based on my experience of engineers who become managers and then try to use engineering approaches to solve human problems...)
I question and dispute this...
There are countries that were underdeveloped back in the 1970s and 80s that are now quite well developed with thriving engineering industries which have engineers in senior government positions.
Even the British prime minister who is the last worthy of the title of great statesman was an industrial chemist.
What sort of people do you think make the best managers, and why?
