PD5500 Pressure Vessel Design

I'm just trying to clarify if a pressure vessel to PD5500 requires PWHT. Referring to PD5500 Annex D Fig. D.1, we have a 30mm thick vessel, with a design reference temperature of -40C - but this is not on the graph !

When looking at  PD5500 Table 4.5-1  as the vessel is less than 350mm thick (Group 1.1 material, EN 10028-3) this would indicate PWHT is NOT required.

But I'm not sure what to do with Annex D Fig. D.1 graph as this vessel is not on the chart

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you

  • If the concern is that it has been manufactured by welding any treatment should be outlined in the Weld Procedure which should have been endorsed by an accredited body such as Zurich, British Engineering Services, etc. The procedure will stipulate material, thicknesses, weld preparation, weld technique (TIG, MMA, MIG), filler materials, pre-heat, pass temperature, post weld heat treat, weld cap finish, etc.

Generally the need to Heat Treat is based on the materials tendency to develop any undesirable residual stresses which is highly dependent on the material but also on how it is welded and the thickness.

Sorry but the only real answer is to look at the weld procedure.
