What do you think about infrared wallpaper?

I recently read this interesting article: Farewell radiators? Testing out electric infrared wallpaper and wondered if anyone in the community had come across/tried it?

It seems like a good innovation, certainly space-saving and probably more efficient and green, but I can't help wondering how easy would it be to maintain? What happens if something goes wrong? Do you rip out the plaster to fit a new 'sheet' of wallpaper? It seems like it would only be suitable for new builds. Can you imagine how much upheaval it would cause to install it behind plaster in older homes? Although older homes are surely where the energy efficiencies need to be made.

With rising temperatures, I wonder if future versions of it can be used to cool homes as well as heat them? Thinking

If costs came down, do you think you would have infrared wallpaper in your home?

  • Or so it's headlined.... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64402524

So what happens when people want to hang a picture, or screw some shelves to the wall?

  • Oh ***......................

  • Well, https://nexgenheating.com/ says on the front page "24 volt low voltage" (I know) and that you can cut holes in it for fittings. Which makes me wonder with the ihelios installation at Kris's gaff why they left a gap where the ceiling rose is, perhaps theirs can't be cut, and relies on a safety isolating transformer to power it.

Anyway i don't see why you would rip out a perfectly good combi boiler and radiators for this. Makes sense to have both options on the table surely. By all means install a cylinder, but have indirectly fed from the boiler too. For more options going forward.

  • Hi Elizabeth,

I never saw them in use however I the heating/cooling wall and ceiling panels are definitely a boost in comfort since they decrease deltaT between air and wall surface.

I'm not real supporter of electric heating but I can see the benefits of pure electric heating (less maintenance and simplicity of installation).

In warmer climate zone having wall and ceiling cooling (water piping) is a premium features.
