Who can sign off an electrical design?

What do you need in order to be classed as competent to sign the 'designer' section on an electrical test certificate? (for commerical EV charging)

Do you need any specific qualifications or is experience enough?

  • In law, for BS7671 purposes, none, but the likes of NICIEC will want you to have a paid up membership to sign one of their red ones !

It rather depends who is going to read the cert. and what they want it for. I have signed a few with no IET or scheme memberships myself but usually someone else on the form does

  • Whoever does the design is the person who need to put their name to it. It makes no sense to put barriers between designing & signing,

Perhaps the question should be 'you need any specific qualifications to do the design?' (to which, as has already been said, the BS 7671 answer is no, but you do need "competence".)

  • We usually have either the designer themselves or the most senior engineer we have available.
