ERADICATE ASBESTOS EXPOSURE

Despites strict rules and guidelines of The Health and Safety Executive in the UK  ,it is disheartening to find that people are still exposed to asbestos in their lines of work.

The long term effects show up long after one may have retired and no longer enjoys the perks of in-employment benefits and they suffer from the effects of exposure to asbestos with debilitating and terminal diseases such as cancer,

How much progress has been made in protecting people from exposure to asbestos?

Why are there still tenders advertised for removal of asbestos by hired staff?

Would automation and AI be useful tools in projects where asbestos is involved?

It is high time that we eradicate contact with asbestos by persons during all stages of engineering projects .

  • One problem is that it is not necessarily known where the asbestos is.  We recently had a house, (built 1965) refurbished.  Under the kitchen floor covering were vinyl tiles (<1% asbestos). All work stopped for 3 weeks whilst they were removed by specialists.  Then when the old bath was taken out, underneath were – vinyl tiles.  Presumably not removed when the bathroom tiles were taken up some time in the past.  Another stop on work whilst removed by specialists.

Then the cupboard containing the hot water tank and gas boiler was demolished, in the floor space between downstairs ceiling and upstairs floorboards was – loose filled asbestos fibre!!  Another, longer stop (and expense).

I know that other houses have had work done without the inconvenience of removal by professional specialists.
