What computer OS system should I purchase within the next 3 months?

My home computer is coming to the end of it's useful life. It is a AMD CPU based Tower with Windows 7 OS.

In view of reported technical problems and cost associated with Windows 11, I am reluctant to purchase a new Windows based computer system.

Should I jump to an Apple Mac using MacOS version 14 Sonoma  or one of the Linux OS systems that use a AMD CPU?

  • In many ways I have enjoyed reading this thread!

As all the comments are neither correct or indeed wrong, in fact some of the comments brings back horrible and very expensive "Lessons" that I saw when working for others, that a server that was needing to be replaced, or a central printer needing updated, then suddenly other items of hardware or software programs no longer work.

When I read about Linux, Windows or AppleMac and what is the best etc.

Is like asking  somebody what car should they buy??

It very much depends on what you have experienced already, what things you liked and what things caused you issues. There is no one stop shop solution.

So do you want a Diesel, Petrol, Hybrid or full EV Vehicle? Do you want, two, four or even five doors? Do you want a sunroof or not? Do you want a heated steering wheel? Will you carry bikes or tow a caravan?

Im fortunate to have worked hard, very hard and have a Porsche 911, Yikes................. Burning all that petrol, less than 20 Miles per Gallon and can seat  myself and one passenger, One weekend bag, or two carrier bags is as much load you can carry. But I love it, suits my needs and if I wish to go fishing or shooting, I jump in my SUV thats a 4x4.

Every software platform, just like cars have their fantastic points, also negative points, but I will never judge what people use as its their choice. What does I think across all of them is the constant updating, wish that could be slowed down.

At this time working on a project replacing three - four year old fast EV Chargers, why?? do you all ask. Zero reason with regards the electrical hardware, the transformers etc could last for years, issue is ..........................yes you guessed it *** software is out of date, cant communicate with newer EV's. Client isnt best pleased, and seeing this all the time now, some serios bits of electrical equipment being replaced because software needs updated and older kit isnt compatable.

  • Hello GTB:

I am glad you enjoyed this thread!

I may have multiple responses to this message but lets start with EV chargers.

My Florida electrical power supplier has a service related to EV chargers.

For US $35 per month year round, they will install and maintain a Class 2 EV charger at ones house.

It allows over night, over weekend charging and includes the cost of electricity used.

With such an offer why would anyone have a privately owned EV charger?

Just for my information what engine is used in your Porsche? When I get a chance I watch a lot of youtube videos about engine breakdown studies - I seem to remember there was a problem with the fuel injectors of some Porsche cars.

  • Peter,

    Its a 911GTS so has a :

Maximum power combustion engine  353 kW / 480 hp
Maximum power combustion engine at rpm 6,500 r/min
Maximum torque combustion engine 570 Nm
Maximum torque combustion engine at rpm range 2,300 - 5,000 r/min
    Maximum engine speed 7,500 r/min
    Number of cylinders 6
    Displacement 2,981 cm³ / 3.0 l
    Bore 91.0 mm
    Stroke 76.4 mm
Maximum power per litre 161.0 PS/l
    Fuel type Super Plus

    Top speed 192 mph
Acceleration 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) with Sport Chrono Package 3.3 sec
Acceleration 0-99 mph (0-160 km/h) with Sport Chrono Package 7.7 sec
Acceleration 0-124 mph (0-200 kmh) with Sport Chrono Package 11.8 sec
In-gear acceleration 49-74 mph (80-120km/h) with Sport Chrono Package 2.2 sec

CO₂ emissions combined (WLTP) 247 g/km
Fuel consumption combined (WLTP) 25.9 mpg

Fingers and everything else crossed, not had any issues, engine and transmission and looks wise, fantastic. the "Interface" with Smartphone to car and their so called PCM unit, is to be honest poor at best compared to far less expensive car brands the interaction I have with my Kia and my Smartphone is far superior!

So its all about the performance of the engine, and to me thats what a car is about, not how I can see tyre pressures or lckeck oil levels from my smartphone!

    Cheers GTB
