Measuring Shear Forces in Gait Analysis Using Smart Insoles

I am currently conducting research on gait analysis using a smart insole system embedded with FSR sensors. While FSR sensors are primarily designed to measure ground reaction forces (normal forces), my focus is on capturing shear forces, which play a significant role in gait dynamics. I am aware that FSR sensors alone may not be sufficient to measure shear forces directly due to their limitation in sensing lateral forces.

Could you suggest any techniques or sensor combinations that would allow for accurate shear force measurements in addition to the normal force?

  • You could try putting some more FSRs around the walls of the shoes, oriented vertically, so that they measure sideward forces. Should give a good approximation of shear forces, showing direction of the shear. The insoles would be cup shaped, not flat.
