Why is 0.156 inch / 3.96mm a standard for electronic connectors?

Just for interest, does anyone know where these bizarre dimensions came from (and more to the point, why)? For example I can't make 0.156inch any sensible fraction of an inch.

It was a completely random thought that came to mind while ordering a 0.156inch pcb connector...

    I don't know where it comes from originally, but I have seen elswhere that it could be from 5/32" (0.15625)

    5/32" comes up fairly often in old engineering. I guess at about 4mm it is quite a finger convenient size. The thread Meccano used was 5/32 BSW.
