Nuclear still generates the most electricity in Europe

An interesting graph from Ember via the Guardian:

‘Rising star’: EU made more electricity from solar than coal in 2024 | Europe | The Guardian

Nuclear is doing most of the work as coal drops away.

  • New gas powered 5 mW generators have been installed locally, as a backup in case the renewable generation isn’t sufficient.

  • It is a pity it is not a storage facility and makes more use of the scarce gas supply.  I presume that this is an open cycle gas turbine, so not the most efficient.

  • My thoughts about AI and its reliance on huge Data centre loads to supply up to date information about traffic jams on the M25 means, I think, that everyone in the world knows where everyone else's GPS is through the internet access precisely at this time.

Well, no wonder we need data centres that take MWs but do we ready need to know about I.95 jams in Florida?? or them jams on the Munich autobahn??

Can we design a Data base system that only contains local GPS data and save MWs of energy and backup plant?

  • Nuclear is doing most of the work as coal drops away.

I guess I could also be read as nuclear remains in overall decline as 2nd placed wind continues its consistent rise.

  • Hello Clive:

I-95 passes about 2 miles from my house here in Florida. We call our section "Blood Alley". The local hospital has helicopters to pick up the accident

  • The graph does show that the nuclear generation declined till 2022 but is now starting to pick up again.

    I certainly hope so.
