Sprinkler pump backup

Hello everyone,

We have been appointed to carry out the M&E design for the complete refurbishment of a leisure centre. The life safety loads will include evacuation lifts, smoke extract fans, and sprinkler pumps.

The sprinkler pump set consists of one electric pump and one diesel pump, with each pump capable of handling the full load.

We will provide an emergency diesel generator as a secondary supply for the lifts and smoke extract fans. Should we also include the sprinkler pump load, or does the diesel sprinkler pump effectively serve as the backup for the electric sprinkler pump?

Thank you for reading.

  • Hi Magid, as a baseline, it's permissible for the sprinkler loads to be excluded from the lift / smoke extract EDG load consideration, because as you mentioned, the sprinkler system has its own dedicated EDG package capable of handling full load backup. However, always check against specific project specs, fire officer's report and ensure the EDG's run time satisfies code. Best regards, Eoin.
