Testing a 3 Phase Motor

Good afternoon all.

We have recently purchased a test meter (Megger MTR105) that has the PI (Polarization Index) and DAR (Di-electric absorption rate) testing options.

The PI test takes a maximum of 10 minutes to perform its test/ winding.

Has anyone carried out this test before and is it possible to carry out the test with the motor links in place or do these have to be removed as instructed in the manual ? I have seen conflicting suggestions that say you can have the links in place.

  • If you have the links in the motor terminal box connected, you will only be able to measure the collective insulation resistance of all three windings to earth.

if you want to measure the insulation resistance to earth of each winding separately, or the insulation resistance between windings, you will need to disconnect the links in the motor terminal box.
