Can Technology Save the World’s Coral Reefs?

I believe we can still make a valuable contribution through engineering, technology and research. Many UK universities and engineering organisations already have the expertise needed to support environmental projects around the world.

The UK could help by investing in underwater monitoring technologies, supporting research into reef restoration, and working with international partners to share knowledge and innovation. Technologies such as sensors, robotics and advanced data analysis can help scientists better understand reef health and respond more quickly to environmental threats.

The benefits would not only support marine conservation but also strengthen the UK’s reputation as a leader in engineering and sustainable technology. It would create opportunities for research, innovation and international collaboration while helping to address a global environmental challenge.

My view is that engineering should not only solve problems at home but also contribute to solutions that have a positive impact globally, and coral reef conservation is one area where UK expertise can make a real difference.
